Cabinet refacing can last a lifetime if the right measures are taken to protect their quality. Even under standard kitchen use conditions, cabinet refacing should last you for many years. Often, your refaced cabinets will last just as long as custom-built cabinets. You can expect to enjoy using them for up to 20 years or more on average.
Many of our customers say that Express Cabinet Guys pricing is 50%-70% less than the refacing bids they’ve received from the big box home improvement centers and the national home renovation companies. With costs landing at around half the price of custom cabinets or less, cabinet refacing is one of the most economical ways to dramatically improve the look of your kitchen. The cost of refacing will vary depending on size and count of cabinets. Count your doors and drawers and use this simple tool to get your pricing estimate.
Refinishing cabinets is the process of keeping all elements of your existing cabinets, but sanding, or chemically stripping before repainting or restaining them. Note that refinishing your cabinets is likely not an option for laminate cabinets as it is difficult or impossible to sand, strip, or paint them. This process can be time-consuming, and will most likely work well only for simple cabinets that have retained most surface quality. Refinishing your cabinets will not fix structural issues with your cabinets such as warping.
Alternatively, refacing is the process of completely replacing all cabinet drawers and doors with new ones while retaining the base structure and “bones” of your current cabinets. Often with new materials and new hardware, refacing offers a more dramatic look that can be enjoyed for much longer, and can often correct many structural issues with kitchen cabinets.
In many cases, refacing your cabinets is the ideal choice! People will often choose to reface their cabinets because it provides them a number of benefits. First, the cost is lower than new cabinet installation and much lower than new custom cabinet installation or a remodel. Refacing allows the convenience of keeping the same kitchen layout, while affordably providing a completely new look and feel to the kitchen. The process of refacing is far easier than a full remodel. With no tear out, your cabinet refacing will only take around three days.
It is cheaper to paint kitchen cabinets. While giving your cabinets a fresh coat of paint is the most affordable option, consider that it can be much less convenient and possibly riskier to handle all aspects of a proper paint job, including surface preparation, without a team of professionals. When comparing the price of hiring a team of professionals to paint your cabinets correctly, painting cabinets might be more comparable to refacing them entirely. Also, note that newer, laminate-front cabinets cannot be pained or sanded and are not good candidates to be repainted, but can be refaced.

In some cases, some cabinets simply can’t be refaced. Cabinets made of particle board or other low-cost materials typically should not be refaced if not in the proper condition. Cabinets on which the underlying frames and structure are unsound or poorly designed are also not good candidates for being refaced. If your cabinet structure is warped or has a strange smell, there may be irreparable water damage, which would make them a poor candidate for being refaced. Cabinetry made of metal cannot be refaced.
Possibly. New laminate can be used to reface your cabinets as long as the old laminate is solid and clean. If you’re not sure whether your cabinets are a good refacing candidate, get in touch with us, and our experts will get on the line and help you out!
